How to install a Home Security System

It is not that difficult to install your home security system. Here is some guidelines for your reference.

  1. First step is planning the work to be done. For this you may find a floor plan of your home and a basic layout of outside hardscape and landscaping all laid out on a drawing will help you plan. Why the outside stuff too? Outside features can hide a burglar or deter him such as a nice thorny bush under the window. Look at the obvious places an intruder could enter your home. Obviously these are the windows, doors and maybe basement entries.
  2. With a hard-wired security system, you will begin with laying out the wires. This means you will need to determine the best places to drill holes into the walls and how to pull the wires through to their destination. You may even need to cut the dry wall and drill holes through the studs unless you are able to pull through the attic or basement spaces. Make sure that any holes drilled are big enough for all the wires that must run through them. A time saver as well as work saver would be to go with a wireless system if you are able to get everything synched up. Much less work as there will be less to no drilling (depends upon how things like the keypad are mounted) and therefore less patching and clean up. You will need to decide if a wireless system is best for you or no.
  3. If you want the sounder to be located indoors, you need not install it in a protective metal box. Mount the sounder on the wall in a place where it can be heard easily. Placing an indoor sounder in a closet or other confined space is not recommended. The kit should include a mounting backplate attached to the sounder by a mounting screw. Remove the nut and separate the backplate from the sounder. You will see a pattern of holes in the backplate. Using wood screws, toggle bolts, or other suitable fasteners, attach the plate to the wall at the place you have chosen to position the sounder. Mount the backplate with enough fasteners to hold the sounder solidly in place. Make sure that the plate is mounted right side up, and that the correct side is forward. There is usually a tongue on the backplate that should be at the top when it is mounted properly. Do not connect the sounder to the backplate until later. You will find that the protective box for an outdoor installation already contains a built-in backplate. Mount the box in the desired location.
  4. Next you want to install your various sensing devices. Nearly all such devices work with magnets, so it is important to measure carefully to ensure you have two distinct settings when the door or window is either open or closed. If you place the magnets too far apart to begin with, for instance, you may encounter troubles as the circuit doesn’t know when an opening has been breached. Test a few times to see just what kind of activity it takes to trigger the alarm, and adjust accordingly until you have the sensitivity you want.
  5. Wire in the control panel once all of the sensors are connected to the circuit. This shouldn't be too inconvenient to do since you want to put the panel at or near your front door, which will already be wired to the alarm box at this point. That way you can easily arm or disarm the alarm as need be. If you're worried about a burglar seeing your control box, you can attempt to hide it by perhaps placing it on the wall in a nearby closet. Just make sure that all of your family members know where it is.
